Humm...

So I was talking to Max briefly about this and I thought I’d just write a bit more about it here because it’s something debatable and very controversial.

The general conception of god is that he is omnipotent and can solve every problem. Moreover, it is commonly stated that all the gods, not just the god we refer to in western society, advocate peace, friendship and prosperity. With all this in mind, why would the gods allow for the creation of nuclear weapons, racism, extremists and George W. Bush?

Why would god allow for all these things to exist if he is omnipotent and promoting peace? You’d think that a singularity that powerful and with interminable powers, could solve all the problems facing the human race, and possibly the universe (we may not be the only ones out there... ) Indeed, there is the theory that god wants us to learn for ourselves, learn from our failures and grow that way. However, humans do not learn, we keep going to war for the wrong reasons, we keep electing corrupt governments, we constantly turn a blind eye to the real problems in our world, and the list keeps going on and on and on. Bottom line, we do not learn from our mistakes, and even if we do, we waste much time and many resources along the way.

Perhaps we have over emphasized the meaning of these gods, we wouldn’t be the first to do that. In 629 AD, at the Sixth Council of Constantinople, there was a vote by all the prominent figures in the lands to vote on what should be put in the bible, what should be emphasized in the bible, who to empower and so on. This just shows that religion is something man made, religion as we know it is man made.

Nevertheless, this does not take away from the meaning of these religious texts. Many of the events depicted in the Bible, Quran and other religious books are events which did take place, yes humans have throw their touch onto these events (we like to exaggerate some things and downplay some other things, it is just in our nature). Possibly, we have taken stuff out of context. It’s like a poem in IB English class, you don’t know what to look for so you look for something that you believe is there. Even if it truly is not present, the mind will reconfigure the things that are present and make it seem like the thing you are looking for is there.

Perhaps gods are the personification of faith? Maybe we justify everything that is unexplainable as god’s will, or a miracle because we cannot comprehend what truly happened? Is it possible that there could be something much more than what we describe god to be, really present out there and we just cannot comprehend his greatness and true omnipotence?

Argue away!

[ What have I done, gonna get yelled at for a while for writing this ]

Edit: This is not an accurate representation of my actual views on this subject, just wanted to get people's opinions on this.
